This webinar hosted by Kyoko will use past trial and workshop videos to illustrate how different dogs respond to a variety of environments, distractions and airflow, including scent scenarios they have never been exposed to. In unexpected situations, it is critical for dog handlers to know their dog and to understand what they are seeing in their dog’s behaviors, because the dog may not stay at source like it is trained to do, or the dog’s normal final response may go out the window. When the airflow is swirly or wind is flukey, handlers need to ensure their dog gets access to all productive sections of a search area, multiple times if needed, in case the dog is not able to catch odor or make a decision on the first pass. At other times, the dog is sure of its find but the handler is not, and the dog’s odor obedience will carry the handler. No matter the situation, teamwork between dog and handler is key.

Videos that will be viewed and discussed include searches from the following events:

  • 2014 & 2017 Mock Trials – Exterior, Container, Interior, Vehicle
  • 2016 Level 1 Container Trial
  • 2016 NW2 Trial – Vehicle, Container, Exterior and Interior
  • 2014-2016 Odor Recognition Tests (Container)
  • 2014 Element Specialty Trial Prep Workshop – Interior and Vehicle
