POULTRY IN MOTION CHICKEN WORKSHOPS with Terry Ryan
Targeting & Discrimination on Oct. 14th / Criteria and Chaining on Oct. 15-16th

WHY SHOULD YOU LEARN TO TRAIN CHICKENS?

People are not "bonded" to their chickens. People do not have bad (or good!) chicken training habits because they've never trained a chicken before, thus avoiding the baggage often taken to dog training workshops. You will not be showing your chickens at the next performance trial or event, nor will you be taking them home, so there is no pressure on what will happen in the future. You probably do not have a library full of chicken training books and DVD's to influence you, much less televisions shows on chicken training.

Chickens will freeze or fly away if they don't like the way you are training them. Unlike dogs, you will know immediately if you are taking advantage of a chicken or pushing too hard too fast. Chickens don't give their trainers a second chances as often as our dogs do.

Training a chicken is a stretch and a boost to your mechanical skills. The average chicken is faster than the average dog, giving you a chance to improve your coordination and timing!

POULTRY IN MOTION PART 1 - TARGETING AND DISCRIMINATION
In this introductory workshop, we will use a clicker to practice the mechanical skills involved in training, such as timing and eye-hand coordination. The hands-on chicken portion of the course will consist of many short (5-10 minute) training sessions throughout the day. Through exercises done with each other and with chickens, students will learn how to capture and shape a behavior using positive reinforcement. Chickens will be taught to peck a physical target and to discriminate between three colors.

This workshop is a great way to see common training concepts in action, such as operant conditioning, discrimination, reinforcement, and extinction. You will also learn coaching skills, constructive critiquing, lateral thinking and problem solving.

We will provide you everything you need for this workshop. No experience necessary!

POULTRY IN MOTION PART 2 - CRITERIA AND CHAINING

This 2-day workshop will build on the concepts and skills learned in the Part One workshop. Participants will be introduced to the concept of "back chaining" in order to teach the chickens to perform a chain of behaviors executed on, through and around a variety of objects...in other words, chicken agility! Participants will learn to create a training plan to elicit accurate and quick responses from the chickens. We will also touch on the intricacies of getting fluent behaviors, or the ability for the chicken to do the behavior in any situation.
